6th graders finished a multi-step project. We started in a very realistic way with a self-portrait and worked our way to a abstracted self-portrait print. Students did this by completing a pencil drawing of themselves. We introduced ourselves to Pablo Picasso and his 'One-Liners'. Using Picasso as inspiration students completed a one line portrait drawing that we then turned into a printing block. Students continued to abstract their prints by adding bright block color using Pop Artist Andy Warhol as inspiration. Below are their final realistic self-portraits and with their final abstracted prints. Check them out below:

Students learned the origins of a newer art form call zentangles. The use of key elements like shapes, lines, and patterns into what they call tangles. They had to choose an animal and fill it with 8 chosen tangles. We added color by applying watercolors to our pieces. Check out the artwork below: 1st hour:7th hour:Students learned about Optical Illusion Art or Op Art. They had to work with tools and use precision as they completed their checkered illusion. Images from both classes are below: 2nd hour:8th hour:The 7th graders started the quarter by studying the elements of art. We focused on line, color, texture, value, shape, and shape. They started by completing a line drawing of their shoe and sectioning their paper into 6 sections. They then chose an element to emphasize in that sections. Check them out below: 1st hour:7th hour:
The 7th graders first project was due yesterday and it also focused on the Elements of Art, but also included a contour line drawing of their shoe. These will be posted on the website by the end of the week for viewing. Their next project will be focused on the fairly new art form of Zentangles. We will be focusing on different patterns and repetition of lines and shapes, which we will combine into the animal of their choice.
The 8th grade art classes were introduced to Optical Illusion Art or Op Art. They are now working to create their own Op Art pieces. Out goal is to finish these by the middle of next week and they will be posted by the end of next week. 8th grade are also responsible for completing a sketchbook assignment every week. These are posted in the classroom and they have one week to complete each assignment. All students are required to bring a sketchbook or sketchpad this year to art class. This has been a great way for students to keep materials together and work on projects or sketches outside of class time. So excited to have all your students in my class! If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me. The link is at the top right of the page or can be found on Skyward. Thanks! Mrs. Besser We started this project by completing a realistic self-portrait drawing. Students then used their drawing to make a one line portrait drawing that was abstracted. Using the one line drawing they created a block that we printed their final pieces with.
